Update 3/6/98

Recordings

We have recorded the Leeds and the Belfast data, and the data from Newcastle will be recorded next week. Labelling is in progress, with the help of a number of volunteers who are working with us over the summer.

Measurements

F0 measurements on a section of the controlled data (the 'sentence data', see first update) have revealed several cross-varietal differences in the phonetic implementation of H*+L and L*+H accents when produced on IP final syllables which offer little scope for voicing. For instance, H*+L is implemented differently in General Southern British English and Leeds English, and L*+H is implemented differently in General Southern British English and Belfast English. The data will be presented at Laboratory Phonology 6 in York at the beginning of July (poster).
